Can I play ESO on next-gen consoles via backward compatibility when they launch?

Yes! You can continue your adventures in Tamriel on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility mode immediately upon each console's respective launch. You will be able to continue playing on your existing account with no loss of progression. Regardless of platform, you must be signed-in, using the same account, and have an active internet connection.


How do I play ESO on next-generation consoles with backward compatibility?

The way you download and play ESO on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 is the same as you might on previous generation consoles.

If you own a digital copy of ESO:

  1. Ensure your console has an active internet connection
  2. Sign in to your existing Xbox Gamertag or PSN ID
    • The one you used to play ESO previously
  3. Visit your game Library, locate The Elder Scrolls Online, and select the option to download

If you own a physical copy of ESO:

  1. Ensure your console has an active internet connection
  2. Sign in to your existing Xbox Gamertag or PSN ID
    • The one you used to play ESO previously
  3. Insert your game disk and launch the game
  4. Follow the instructions on the console to make sure the game is up to date

Once the download and install process is complete, you can play!

Note that if you no longer have the disc from your physical version of the game, you will not be able to play on the next generation console. Physical versions of the game will require the game disc in order to play on next generation. Finally, if you own a physical copy of The Elder Scrolls Online, you will not be able to make use of backwards compatibility if you have a digital-only next generation console.

Yes! You can continue playing with your same accounts via backward compatibility on your respective next-gen consoles without interruption or loss of progress—same characters, servers, everything!


Can I move from PlayStation 4 to Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One to PlayStation 5?

No. You cannot move your account from one console family to another.

If you currently own or plan to purchase an Xbox One or PS4 copy of The Elder Scrolls Online Code together online. , you will be able to upgrade free to the next-gen version of the game for the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 upon its release.


What improvements to the game can I expect from backward compatibility?

ESO on the PlayStation 5 in backward compatibility mode runs essentially as a PS4 Pro, so if you have a base PS4, you will see much better graphical fidelity and a more stable frame rate. All PS5 users will see a significant improvement in load times.

ESO on the Xbox Series X in backward compatibility mode runs essentially as an Xbox One X, so if you currently play on a base Xbox One, you will see much better graphical fidelity and a more stable frame rate. All Xbox Series X users will see a significant improvement in load times over all previous gen Xboxes.

ESO in backward compatibility mode on Xbox Series S runs essentially as an Xbox One S, so if you currently play on a base Xbox One, you will see some fidelity upgrades. All Xbox Series S users will see a significant improvement in load times over all previous gen Xboxes.

The Elder Scrolls Online is a MMO, Role-Playing, Open-World, Action, and Adventure game published by Bethesda Softworks released in 2014.

  • Put the IP address of your computer or gaming console in the appropriate box in your router.
  • Put the TCP and UDP ports for your game in the matching boxes in your router.
  • Frequently you have to reboot your router for the changes to take effect.
